Black & Decker ICR500 First Impressions Cord-Reel Iron with Nonstick Soleplate Review

Black & Decker ICR500 First Impressions Cord-Reel Iron with Nonstick SoleplateI like the fact that the dial is on the top of the iron and not under the handle. Also great, is the rewinding feature and no tangling or dangling wire.

I've used the iron several times, and find that unless I have it turned on to a high number for steam ironing, it irons, but doesn't steam. When it does, it does an excellent job.The dry iron is very good.

I haven't tried the self-clean feature; I will do so after a month or so.I've always used GE/Black and Decker irons and have been satisfied with them.My last iron which was not a Black and Decker, clogged up and though I set the iron for steam, it did not steam. And, what made me buy a new iron was that the dial (which was under the handle and difficult to turn) wound completely around and I could not tell whether it was ON or OFF.

In all, I am happy with my new B&D iron.

It is now January 2010, and for the past few months had excellent results ironing. When rewinding the cord would stop, I would have to pull it out a little, then press the button to rewind. This is a minor inconvenience.

My problem now is that the sole plate is scorching, and I am not using any spray starch since the steam setting does an excellent job.During the winter months, I don't iron more than 30 minutes at a time.During the summer months, I have an hour or more or ironing at a time.A few weeks ago, I had flannel shirts and PJs, and when I finished ironing and turned it off, the sole plate was all BLUE.It could be from the flannel shirts I ironed.I had one hard time trying to clean it off as the manual instructs. Finally I resorted to a Rescue soap pad.Again, tonight, I ironed several men's cotton shirts and a few cotton dish towels -- and the sole plate scorched.I scrubbed and scrubbed for over 45 minutes, and got most of it off.

I am greatly disappointed. There is no reason for scorching as no spray starch was used.I intend to contact B&D to see what they say.

Smooth out wrinkles quickly and easily with this versatile iron. The unit features a nonstick soleplate for effortless gliding, plus a pointed tip that works well for getting into pleats, between buttons, and along seams. Its user-friendly controls offer a fabric-select dial, a dry ironing option, and push buttons for spray mist and steam surge. Use the iron on a flat surface for traditional ironing or hold it upright for vertically steaming out wrinkles from curtains or hanging garments. The iron also provides a fabric guide with setting suggestions--1 for synthetics, 2 for nylon and silk, 3 for polyester and rayon, 4 for cotton blends, 5 for wools, and 6 for cotton and linen. Its Smart Steam technology automatically generates the right amount of steam for the fabric type selected. Other highlights include a translucent water tank, an "on" indicator light, an anti-drip system that prevents water spotting at low temperatures, and an Auto Clean system for keeping the steam vents free of buildup, as well as a Comfort Grip handle, a slip-resistant heel, and a cord-reel button for tidy, compact storage. To help ensure safe operation, the iron will shut off automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity if left on its soleplate or tipped over on its side; if left vertically on its heel rest, it will shut off after eight minutes. The iron measures approximately 12-4/5 by 5-2/5 by 6 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
